Official informal Chinese clothing, Chinese dress, cheongsam, oriental dress was worn for other events, which were not connected with major ceremonies or government matters. It was considered bad taste to wear formal robes on private occasions, at home, or when visiting friends. Ordinary dress, chang fu, consisting of a nei tao or plain long gown of silk, usually reddish brown, grey, or blue and cut in the same style as the dragon robe, was worn under the pu fu. Low-ranking officials would generally also wear the nei tao under a pu fu on semi-formal occasions. This nei tao was a Manchu garment, originally designed for traveling by horse. It had long sleeves and narrow horse-hoof cuffs to protect the hands, and center splits at front and back as well as the sides. On some there was a detachable section at the lower right side above the hem for removal when riding on horseback, and this was often worn by military mandarins who were not supposed to ride in sedan chairs. For formal wear the cuffs would be worn down to cover the hands as it was considered impolite to show them, but for informal occasions the cuffs could be turned back and the sleeves pushed up.
